Aamir Khan reacts to 3 Idiots’ success internationally; says “Main China mein star bana hu thanks to piracy..”

Aamir Khan’s many films have earned huge amounts at the box office, and some of his films have also made bumper earnings abroad. Films like 3 Idiots and Dangal not only created box office records in India but also in Japan, China, and Turkey. These films have significantly increased Aamir’s fan following internationally. During an event, Aamir reacted to this and said that he had no idea about it.

Recently, Aamir Khan participated in ABP’s Idea of India Summit 2025. There, he discussed various issues, including his fees and other aspects of cinema. During this, Aamir reflected on the success of 3 Idiots and his fandom and success in China, saying he had no idea about the success of the film.

Aamir Says, “Humne film banayi, India mein hit hui, phir hum so gye (We made the film and were okay with its success in India),” Aamir jokingly remarked and added that it was only after six-seven months after the film’s release in India that they found out about ‘3 Idiots’ success in China.

Aamir also added that ‘3 Idiots’ became a success in China because of piracy as the Rajkummar Hirani film had not been released in China. Aamir says, “3 Idiots went viral in China because of piracy. Main China mein star bana hu thanks to piracy( I became a star in China thanks to piracy).”

Aamir recalls they got calls saying that ‘3 Idiots’ had become a hit in China. An interesting fact about the film also was that most Chinese kids had seen the film and made sure their parents saw it too, further adding, “So, thanks to the Chinese audience who loved our film.”

It is worth mentioning that the director of 3 Idiots is Rajkumar Hirani. Besides Aamir Khan, the film also starred Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sharman Joshi, and R. Madhavan in leading roles. It was loosely inspired by Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone. In a recent interview with Dainik Bhaskar, filmmaker and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra shared that he is actively working on the scripts for both 2 Idiots and Munna Bhai 3.

On the work front, Aamir Khan will be next seen in Sitaare Zameen Par with Genelia Deshmukh. The sports drama film is directed by R. S. Prasanna, and produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao. The film is a sequel to the 2007 film Taare Zameen Par, it is a remake of the Spanish film Champions.

He will also make a cameo appearance in the 2025 film Coolie, starring Rajinikanth. Reportedly, he is also in talks for the reunition with Salman Khan for Andaz Apna Apna 2.
